Heroic Image of Napoleon on Horse
  • -- 28th March 2023 --
Playing with SSL certs again. https://www.napoleonsims.com appears to work fine. Redirection from http://www.napoleonsims.com stills appears to be somewhat flakey. This is a purely passive website. It hasn't any cookies and doesn't ask for or keep any information about you. So you can ignore warnings from the Chrome or Edge browsers if you wish. Their concern is misplaced. Alternatively you can explicitly specify the HTTPS URL and that'll be fine too. I do hope to get finished with this sort of nonsense soon and actually post something of interest here in the next little while. It'll be a few weeks at least as there are other things in the queue. Tax season among other things.

Still alive. Didn't plan on Covid but survived it and suppose the three shots of vaccine may have helped. Still intend to do Maneuver on Ulm and Trafalgar Campaign posts. Got the SSL certs to work but they broke again on renewal. Not amused and have an administrative mess to fix up. This site orginated in 2000 and things have changed and I need to update my hosting service and IP registration to match. Can't make any promises about dates but that and further posts are in the queue. Honest.

Still alive and still intend to do Maneuver on Ulm and Trafalgar Campaign posts. Most recent work is likely not visible to you. I've installed a SSL cert for www.napoleonsims.com despite the site being totally passive and not requiring let alone storing any user information. Otherwise some browsers will suggest it's not secure. So far this works if you access the site with "https://www.napoleonsims.com" but I haven't got the redirect from http to https up and working yet.

Been quite the year hasn't it? Still alive here. Still planning to do a post on the Maneuver on Ulm. Still can't give an accurate estimate for when. May do post on Trafalgar campaign first.

  • -- 6th March 2020 --
Apologies. Sorry about how late the post regards the maneuver on Ulm is. It is still in the pipeline. Can't honestly give an accurate estimate of when it'll be done. Probably not this month almost certainly this year. Other balls in the air, my time is not all my own.

  • -- 4th December 2019 --
Work on a post regarding the "Maneuver on Ulm" in late summer and early fall of 1805 is in progress. It'll be several more days.

  • -- 25th October 2019 --
Fixed spelling and formatting errors here.

  • -- 23rd October 2019 --
Have put up a new post on the brief peace that broke out in 1802 between the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. Had hoped to cover the period in 1803 and 1804 during which the war was just a peripheral and maritime one between just Britain and France, but during which Alexander of Russia became increasingly disillusioned with Napoleon, in greater detail. Perhaps at some later date will do so.

  • -- 19th August 2019 --
Noticed that wrote "Lower" Rhine where meant "Upper" in post on Europe without Bonaparte. Fixed.

  • -- 17th August 2019 --
Finally the long promised post on Napoleonic artillery. Might yet add some more illustrations and do some editing. Something always seems to sneak by.

  • -- 1st of August 2019 --
Now August and still haven't got April's post on Artillery up. There is hope. The distractions of the last few months appear to be near their end and I hope to have something for you by the middle of this month.

  • -- 19th of June 2019 --
Well miracles do happen but it's looking like that's what it's going to take for me to finish the "April" post on artillery before mid-July.
I'd also hoped to do a May post on the brief peace that broke out before the Napoleonic Wars proper began in 1805.
For June I'd planned something on the Grande Armee's maneuver on Ulm, then finally for July I was hoping to continue with the later part of the 1805 campaign that culminated in Austerlitz.
Rather looks like July might be coming in September or October for me and my posts this year.
Sorry about that but other priorities. Should be one time.

  • -- 22nd of April 2019 --
Looks like will be busy with other things for end of April and first bit of May. It's unlikely "April's" post on artillery organization and tactics is going to appear before mid-May.

  • -- 1st of April 2019 --
Fixed typo, some bad grammar, etc. in March's post on cavalry. No joke.

  • -- 31st of March 2019 --
Have done a post on Napoleonic cavalry for March. Once again discovered the topic was more complicated than expected. Post is more an outline of what I hoped to achieve than genuinely substantive, but I hope it's a useful overview for some of you at least.

  • -- 14th of March 2019 --
Did some light editing, mostly fixing spelling errors, of Post number 17 from July 2018. This post covers Bonaparte's presence in Egypt and Syria after the success of his initial invasion and the Battle of the Pyramids in July 1798.

  • -- 28th of February 2019 --
An entry for February with a post on the topic of Revolutionary and Napoleonic War Infantry Drill, Organization, and Tactics

  • -- 31st of January 2019 --
An entry for January with a post on the topic of Moreau's German Campaign in 1800.

  • -- 27th of December 2018 --
A hasty entry for December proper with a post on the topic of Bonaparte's Second Italian Campaign in 1800. Up to Marengo.

  • -- 23rd of December 2018 --
So struggled with November's post on events in Europe while Bonaparte was absent in Egypt. Parts of it could use improvement but trust you'll find what's here interesting and informative. Please check out Europe without Bonaparte 1797-1800. Merry Christmas.

  • -- 22nd of December 2018 --
Work on unfinished post for November revealed big holes in timeline regards 1799 and have partially fixed them. See timeline for 1799.

  • -- 30th of November 2018 --
Pretty clear at this point that won't be getting November's post (events in Europe while Bonaparte was in Egypt) actually finished while it's still November. Also flu shots are likely a good idea.

  • -- 31st of October 2018 --
The post for October is up. The topic is the war in Germany in 1796 and early 1797. As usual the post could easily have been longer and more detailed. I do hope what I have written will be found a useful overview of this neglected topic.

  • -- 30th of September 2018 --
September's post is up; the Revolutionary Wars from 1792 to 1795. Another interesting period hard to do justice to. It can be argued that the French Revolution was more important politically over the last couple of centuries than both the American War of Independence and the First Industrial Revolution in Britain. Both these important events being contemporary. The Revolution was tightly and inextricably interwined with the wars it fought with the rest of Europe. So without hyperbole we're talking about the origin of the modern world. From the practical point of making sense of the history this is a difficulty. You have the problem that is common with other times and civilizations that the actors had very different views of the world than the modern one. It takes a major effort to wrap ones head around those world views. However you also have the problem that issues that are relevant in our modern world tend to be controversial. Usually one difficulty or the other can be expected to predominate. This period has both problems in full. Awkward. There may be revisions to this post.

Napoleon on a Donkey
  • Improved UI - with intuitive 3D graphical display of information and orders giving.
  • Front end GUI vs. backend resolution engine.

Already done:

Pensive Napoleon
  • A shareware game called "Napoleon the Emperor" which covered the battle of Waterloo. Registered versions added the battles of Ligny and Quartre Bras. This game was first released in 1996. It achieved it's design goals of being able to reproduce the historical battle with just a few hours of play. Unfortunately, the weakness of its User Interface and the AI for subordinate units detracted significantly from its playability.

Rather to my surprise I've found copies of this game are still available on Web-Grognards. Payment and ordering information in these downloads is outdated.

However, if you've played the Waterloo scenario and feel you'd like to have the Ligny and Quartre Bra ones mail me by clicking here. I'll e-mail you a free but generic copy. No warranty and the offer may not last.
